Good or Bad Lincoln?

Usually Abraham Lincoln is thought of as a wonderful president with mostly good qualities attched to his memory...but after our discussion today in class, should Lincoln be blamed for starting the Civil War? Should this be a negative mark on his record? What are your thoughts?

  1. I think Lincoln made the best choice he had. He had problems before he even got into his office. He had to give up on the South or get them back no matter what it took. If he didn't do that slavery issue wouldn't even matter because Lincoln couldn't do anything about it anyways if the South was its separate country.

  2. Abraham Lincoln did the best he could do. If he acknowledged the South as a separate country and did nothing to keep them in the Union, it will show that our Constitution and government is weak. If Lincoln had not started the war, it could possibly allowed the Southern states to secede permanently. This will show that our Constitution can be destroyed by the conflict about states' rights and slavery. Therefore, Lincoln had no other choice but to force the South into the Union. Since Lincoln knew that our country will be divided if the issue of slavery continues, he had to end slavery as a way to keep peace in the many years after the war. Even though Lincoln was extremely hated during his presidency, his legacy will go on for generations; perhaps forever. We cannot allow this war to badly influence our view of one of our nation's greatest leaders in history, but to see it as a sign of his bravery and perseverance that helped him endure the stress of the infamous Civil War.
